Alison repping GMU!
Meg and Blanca!

Up and ready somewhat early because we’re going to Turin today! I was able to get cheap tickets for first class (cheaper than 2nd class regular) because I bought the tickets so far in advance, so we all got a little spoiled today!  We deserve it, haha!  One of the things I love about first class is that we get free drinks….well, I should say the drinks are included in the price. The other is that we are able to get free wifi.  I took a picture of each of the students holding our GMU pennant and sent a couple to CGE (Global Ed).

We arrived in Turin and I bought the metro tickets for us to get to the dorms and off we went!  Everyone got settled into their rooms and then people went to get lunch.  I went to Eataly with Meg.  For those who have never been to one, they are amazing and awesome!  There is one in NYC…haven’t been there yet.  Imagine a fancy, upscale grocery store (Wegmans) and there are restaurants inside the store where you can eat in a casual manner. Then, imagine the food is fresh and basically straight from the cow/garden/etc.  Then, imagine the taste explosion in your mouth as you eat it with a little olive oil or balsamic if needed.  Divine!

Last year, I had the salami and cheese platter.  It was so good, I convinced Meg she should try it this year.  She liked it!  Pair it with fresh honey, apple compote, and freshly baked bread?  Why leave to go anywhere else?  However, we had to leave eventually because we had a tour or two to attend.  After a very crowded, 20 minute bus ride, I guessed correctly and we got off the bus!

The four fashionistas left for their tour and I took the rest of us (16) to the Cinema Museum.  The Cinema Museum was renovated and reorganized a little bit and I loved the changes!!  They weren’t dramatic, but they installed touch-screens for information in both English and Italian, they rearranged some of the exhibits, and they added a few small things.  The result was a terrific visit!  I chose not to go to the top this year, simply because it was cloudy.  I was hoping it wouldn’t rain (again) and that we might be able to see the Alps, but alas, it was cloudy. For the record, I prefer the rain and clouds to the heat and humidity.

After that, everyone split up and went their separate ways. I wanted to buy them the scrumptious coffee, the Bicirin, but it was not in the cards this trip.  Valerie and I wound up walking back to the metro together and had a nice chat.  She might come to Florence next spring, which would be excellent!

I got back a little after Meg did and off to Eataly we went for dinner!  We settled on beef for dinner.  She had a monstrously large hamburger which was more tartare than cooked, but she enjoyed it.  I had steak tartare, which was pretty good, especially once I added their fancy rock salt, a little olive oil and a touch of balsamic!

While we were eating, Meg told me about the Fashion tour they did with Sara.  She is my go-to for Turin tours and she was thrilled to finally be able to do a fashion-related tour!  They went to the Palazza Madama in central Turin.  It used to be a residence and is now a museum.  Apparently, there were exhibits of the centuries of fashion in and around Europe, focusing on Spanish and French influence (since they invaded and owned Italy for some points in history) and then how Italy has become its own fashion capital in its own rights.

Then we went around the store to see what they had.  We had fun looking at different things and comparing prices.  The craziest thing we found was a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer for 619E.  That works out to about $842!!  Wow!! For that price, I would just mix by hand……we ended our evening there with an espresso (mine decaf) and Meg had a piece of Sacher Torte…which is really Austrian, but SO GOOD!!

We came back to the dorms and called it a night.  Then I realized I hadn’t told everyone when to be in the lobby in the morning, so I put up a note and then called every room and posted something on Facebook.  Once that was accomplished, time for bed :o)
