1 July 2014

Today we went to the market.  I know it’s a hit, especially with the girls who love to shop! I told them to also look through the food market, but I don’t think a single person did, hahaha!!  I think the food market is the best part.  If I am lucky enough to go to Florence next spring, I will do all of my shopping for fruits and veggies at markets.  Just so much better!

I left them to shop until they dropped and I came back to the dorms.  I needed to get my metro card sorted out (check!), I needed to pay some bills (check!) and I needed to start recording my receipts for the program.  This year, I am going to try to take pictures of receipts so I have them all.  This is always the least favorite aspect of the trip….ugh, such a pain!  But…so worth it, since they cover my food :o)  The best part of the morning was that the internet worked!!!  Hallelujah!

We all met up at the school and watched a movie.  It’s a comedy and though I’ve probably seen it about 10 times now, I just love this movie!  Big Deal on Madonna Street is just plain funny.  It’s a good natured movie about crooks and the “big” heist.  Clever and well-acted.

When the movie was over, it was time for our 2nd lecturer.  Federico Boni is hilarious! He talks about Pop-Politix and how there are three elements:  the event, the media that shapes the event, and the resulting social aspect/views of the event.  Bill Clinton playing the sax on MTV is a perfect example.   He was not a celebrity (as such), he was a politician.  But, through the media, he became “every man” and relatable and so the media changed how a politician is viewed.

He went off on a little bit of a tangent about zombies, but it all worked back around to what we were discussing. At the end, I asked him to show the two videos that demonstrate the power of social media from about 2006.  One is Berlusconi’s campaign (Meno male che Silvio c’è) and the other was his opponent’s, Walter Veltroni (I am PD).  He hates those songs and always good-naturedly cringes when I ask him to show them!

It was a long day.  Meg and I went out to Gemelli’s for pizza and spaghetti and came home to try to get online.  It was unsuccessful, but there you go.  We tried!  Maybe it will be fixed before the month ends??  I chatted with one of the Dancing Mormons and they were really frustrated too!  Ugh!
